IAU OAE Center India

Teacher training program

at IUCAA, Pune

Overview

A teacher training program will be conducted at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) which hosts the OAE Center India in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR-HBCSE). The workshop will focus on about 50 teachers in India who teach geography/science/mathematics from grades 5 - 10. The workshop will include discussions with astronomy educators, and astronomers from IUCAA and TIFR-HBCSE.

How do seasons happen? How to explain the phases of the moon? How do eclipses happen? What about tides in the sea? Over the two day workshop, the teachers will hear about these astronomy concepts taught in schools through models, role play, and other activities. They will come up with ways to teach these concepts to school children and clear common misconceptions commonly faced by children.

The workshop will also include a novel component where teachers divide themselves into groups and design a model lesson plan for teaching one of these concepts and showcase the interdisciplinarity of astronomy.

Given the large interest, we are also live streaming the meeting at the following link:
